Dan Hansen - MSM Sales Specialists
Dan Hansen is Managing Director of MSM. MSM is a niche consultancy practise that specialises in delivering increased profitability through sales. From our offices in New Zealand and United Kingdom our objective is to help export businesses develop successful sales channels that are profitable and sustainable. Since 2009 MSM has helped a wide range of exporters recognise the sales potential of their products in international markets. MSM's approach combines strong strategic thinking and working closely with businesses to execute strategy at market level. MSM's services consist of consultancy, commercialisation and market research and validation services.
Approximately 90% of our work is focused helping organisations generate sales growth in export markets. In particular Asia Pacific, North America, United Kingdom and Europe. We work with a wide variety of clients from the manufacturing and distribution, building services, media, technology, business services and electronics sectors. Since 2009 we have supported approximately $200m of gross sales revenue and in 2012 delivered average growth rates across our projects above 20%.
With over 20 years' experience in sales operations and commercial strategy, I have held Senior Management roles in New Zealand, United Kingdom and North America and have first-hand commercial experience in over 20 countries with many of the world's most recognised brands. My personal experience includes growing multi-million dollar businesses in international markets, setting up multi-national distribution channels and sales teams, acquisitions, company restructures and managing intellectual property infringements. Through MSM I am passionate about helping businesses grow export sales through focussed strategy and execution.
Outside of MSM I hold independent board membership positions and am a keen sailor and tramper. Raised in the Bay of Plenty, I live in Tauranga with my wife Sharon.

Steve Trickett - Global Fresh NZ
Global Fresh NZ exports and imports fresh fruit. The main export market is Australia primarily for kiwifruit and avocados which comprise around 70% of activity. The company also exports to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India, USA, Canada and from time to time Continental Europe and the UK.
Since graduating from Lincoln University in 1980, Steve's entire 35 year working career has been in export produce marketing including senior roles within NZ Kiwifruit Marketing Board, Chiquita Brands NZ, ENZA Fresh, Turners & Growers International and in the past 12 years Global Fresh NZ Ltd and subsidiary Just Avocados Ltd.
Steve has experience across the full spectrum of export activity spanning procurement and field operations, export operations & logistics, international sales and marketing, new market development, strategic business development with particular skill acquired managing "collaborative" exporter programs and joint ventures.
Steve is married to Tracey with a 21 year son Ben, living the dream at Mount Maunganui.
Adam Dyck - Surtees Boats
Surtees Boats was born in the early 1990s when Neil Surtees built his own aluminum boat to fish Whakatane's prolific offshore waters. Today, Surtees Boats manufactures in excess of 350 vessels a year for a growing number of fishing enthusiasts around the South Pacific. Export into Australia and the Pacific region comprises a significant portion of the business utilising a network of dealers in each region.

Andy Warren - BLOOMZ & PIPZ Ltd
Owner / Director
BLOOMZ is a leading Horticultural company, specializing in the breeding, propagation and marketing of Zantedeschia (Calla lilies), other exotic species: Cordyline, Phormium, Leptospermum (manuka) and now through sister company Plant Improvement New Zealand (PIPZ) Ltd, various fruit plants including kiwifruit and a range of berryfruit. The company produces high health Tissue Culture (TC), manages IP and along with other related plant stock has established relationships with wholesale customers and commercial growers around the world.
BLOOMZ and PIPZ are actively involved with breeders and producers of a range of plant stock to facilitate both import into NZ, as well as export & licencing/ development of such material.
Owner and director, Andy Warren, is a well-known BOP exporter (30 years) and has personally developed markets in a number of countries. At a national level Andy is involved in various councils and committees, including Deputy Chair of the Plant Market Access Council (PMAC), and a member of the national Germplasm Consultative Committee (GERMAC), the Plant Varieties Group (PVG) and the Import Health Standard (IHS) Working Group for Kiwifruit. Andy also has detailed knowledge of horticultural biosecurity.

Anne Young - Education Tauranga
Anne Young is the Regional Manager of Education Tauranga, a membership organisation of educational institutions (primary to tertiary) within the Tauranga region who are involved in export education.
As Regional Manager, Anne is tasked with raising the profile of export education in the region and ensuring the growth of international students who choose the Tauranga region as their study destination. These goals are aligned to the wider New Zealand Government goals, where the aim is to double the value of the export education sector in New Zealand to $5 billion by 2025.
Anne has worked in the export education sector for 18 years and been involved in extensive international student marketing and recruitment in South East Asia, North Asia and the USA. Anne has a good understanding of many of New Zealand's major export markets and can offer insight and advice on targeting new markets to other members of the Executive.
In addition, Education Tauranga can assist export companies with obtaining volunteers or part time workers from their international student/parent population who can provide relevant first-hand knowledge into their respective countries which may be of use to companies looking to export there.
Annette Webb - Mainfreight Air & Ocean

Mainfreight Air and Ocean NZ has 14 Branches in New Zealand and Air and Ocean Branches in Australia, USA, North and South East Asia and Europe.
Working under the Mainfreight Air and Ocean brand, Annette has held a variety of roles in her 16 year career to date with Mainfreight, a Licensed Customs Broker, Sales, Customer Services Management, Training/Auditing & Compliance, Project Management offshore & Key Account Implementation and Management.
In September 2013, Annette relocated from Auckland and was appointed as Branch Manager for Mainfreight Air and Ocean Tauranga. Mainfreight Air and Ocean Tauranga boasts a team of 15 highly skilled, experience and passionate team members servicing Customers in the Bay of Plenty region for Import, Export, Customs Brokerage services and specialist Export Documentation requirements.
Annie Hill - Priority One (Co-Opted Exec Member)
Annie Hill is Priority One's Communications/Projects Manager. Priority One is the economic development agency for Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty, established by the business community and part funded by business membership. It is also contracted to deliver economic outcomes by Tauranga City and Western Bay of Plenty District councils. Priority One's focus is on making the sub-region the business location of choice, resulting in a highly productive, competitive, export-based economy that attracts talented, skilled and creative people and the businesses that need them.
Annie's role includes project-based research and analysis, cluster group facilitation, strategic plan delivery, economic monitoring and local government relationships. Her experience includes management support roles both in New Zealand and overseas. She also has a strong background in local government, particularly in the areas of finance, strategic planning and contract management. She keeps the Export NZ BOP Executive informed on issues relating to economic development, as well as bringing strong linkages to local and national networks to the table.
Bevan Jelley - NZ Avocado
New Zealand Avocado is the peak body for avocados in New Zealand and includes the NZ Avocado Growers' Association Inc. (NZAGA) and Avocado Industry Council Ltd (AIC). We work with New Zealand avocado industry stakeholders to set export standards, facilitate market access, promote New Zealand avocados in export markets and provide technical information to New Zealand avocado growers. New Zealand Avocado undertakes R&D to improve quality, supply chain efficiency and on-orchard productivity.
New Zealand's avocado industry is in a great position to realise exciting opportunities for growth in both sales and productivity, thanks in part to the new Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme with the Ministry for Primary Industries.
New Zealand Avocado's five year 'Go Global' partnership aims to triple productivity to 12 tonnes per hectare and quadruple industry returns to $280 million by 2023. The programme aims to transform New Zealand's avocado industry from reliance on one market to a globally competitive, high value, sustainable export industry.
Bevan is the Marketing Manager for New Zealand Avocado and project lead for market development objectives of the PGP programme. Bevan has experience in global market demand modelling, market and consumer research, collaborative marketing strategy and implementing promotions programmes both domestically and offshore. His previous experience includes marketing roles in the UK and Australia and a year living and working in South Korea.
Clare Swallow - Cucumber
Cucumber uses technology to solve their customers toughest challenges. Export specific services provided are enterprise web (digital strategy, content strategy, integrated website development, analytics and optimisation) and business optimisation services (data dashboard development, BI, custom software).
Clare is an expert in digital strategy, digital execution, technology strategy, marketing and customer engagement. Clare brings to the ExportNZ BOP executive cCommittee a view of future disruption as a result of technology that exporters and other businesses should be looking to take advantage of, or at least be aware of. Clare has practical, current experience helping large New Zealand businesses define, design and develop their digital presence.
Daniel Faris - Locus Research
Locus Research are a full-spectrum product development and commercialisation agency. This means that they research, develop and design products in collaboration with their clients, with the view of bringing these new products successfully to market.
Daniel's skills are in programme and project management, product commercialisation and design management. Daniel brings to the ExportNZ BOP executive committee a commercially orientated view on the development of the Bay of Plenty export market, with a particular focus on innovation, product development and design.
Daniel lives in Tauranga with his wife and two young children and cares deeply about the future of the city and region.
Dan Waugh - Comvita New Zealand

The company was founded by Claude Straford and Alan Bougen with the aim of helping people to lead natural, healthy and vibrant lives. Today Comvita is the largest apiary business in New
Zealand with over 30,000 hives and exports products globally through a mixed model of both wholesale and direct-to-consumer, through Comvita branded retails locations and seven country specific eCommerce websites and third party outlets. Comvita has over 500 staff located in New Zealand, Australia, Hong
Kong, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the USA.
Dan's current role is General Manager - ICT for Comvita globally. In this role he is responsible for all aspects of Information Communications Technology for Comvita including IT Strategy, Service Delivery and Application Management. Dan is also a member of the Comvita Senior Management Team responsible for the execution of Comvita's global strategy. Dan began his career with Fonterra's Corporate Graduate Programme and has worked internationally in various roles for companies including British Airways and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM).
Dan is passionate about technology and the role it is playing in changing business, industry and society. Working for a primary producer who exports to Asia, Europe and the US, Dan is regularly exposed to the unique challenges that come with a global exporting business. He is a proud Kiwi who enjoys seeing New Zealand companies succeeding on the international stage.
Dan is married to Sarah, with two sons aged four and two. He is a Captain in the Army Reserve having served for 12 years and enjoys hunting, fishing and four wheel driving in his spare time.
Duncan Catanach - New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (Co-Opted Exec Member)
General Manager - ICT
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is the Government's international business development agency, supporting New Zealand companies in 48 locations around the world. Our role is to increase New Zealand companies' international success, by helping them boost their global reach and build capability.
Duncan is a Customer Manager based in NZTE's Tauranga office. Duncan works with a portfolio of Bay of Plenty and Waikato food and technology companies to help them grow bigger, better and faster in international markets. Prior to this role he was Trade Commissioner - West Coast US for four years based in Los Angeles where he managed a team of business development managers in LA and San Francisco. He has also held roles in NZTE's strategy and technology teams and led NZTE's efforts in health technology globally for a number of years.
Before joining NZTE, Duncan was a strategy consultant based in Melbourne where he worked with international companies in a diverse range of sectors. Duncan also spent ten years as a full-time professional classical musician, performing as Principal Timpanist with one of Australia's leading orchestras, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Duncan moved to Tauranga in July 2014 with his wife, Deborah Crowe (a technology entrepreneur and business advisor) and son and they are loving living in the Bay. In his spare time you can find him spending time with his family in the great New Zealand outdoors (skiing, biking, white-water kayaking and walking) and practicing and teaching yoga.
Gavin Frost - Beca
Beca provides engineering and associated design and project management services from 17 offices in 7 countries with 3000 staff. Projects have been successfully completed in more than 70 countries, for clients ranging from governmental to commercial, industrial and also private sector clients. Beca's international work has been recognised by NZ Trade and Enterprise with the 2009 Judges Supreme Award.
Beca's Tauranga office has a strong export focus and is currently providing engineering, architectural and planning professional services on projects across a number of countries. Projects range from schools and hospitals in the North Pacific to infrastructure and planning projects in Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia to industrial projects in Thailand, Australia and Indonesia.
Gavin is responsible for overall management of Beca's business in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato which is delivered by 230 staff. He has worked in Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia and completed numerous projects from NZ and Australia for International clients.
Gavin brings a sound understanding of international engineering consulting and the challenges facing NZ companies in delivering value to clients in other parts of the world.
Daniel Ramsey - North Island Mussels Ltd
North Island Mussels is a vertically integrated business, jointly owned by Sanford and Cedenco, which grows and processes NZ Green-Lipped mussels for export markets in the US, Europe and Asia. Coromandel mussels are processed into premium frozen Halfshell and mussel meat products at the processing facility in Greerton, Tauranga. The business employs a multicultural workforce of over 300 workers from 20+ nationalities and currently processes over 12,000 tonnes of mussels per year.
Daniel has a strong background in operations management and has built his career around FMCG food manufacturing. With experience in dairy, poultry and now seafood he has an excellent understanding of MPI export requirements, new product development and has a passion for operational excellence to develop World Class business operations.
Gerald Farmer - Bank of New Zealand

In my role as the International Trade and Cashflow Solutions Specialist for the Bay of Plenty & Central Plateau Region I am privileged to work with customers across a diverse range of industry sectors providing them with timely quality risk management advice, and thereby mitigating the inherent risks in their trade transactions. This in turn assists with structuring their working capital facilities and enhancing their cash flow.
BNZ is one of the few New Zealand banks to maintain a full domestically based international trade service with international processing centres in Auckland and Christchurch.
I have served as BNZ's delegate on the Export Bay of Plenty Executive Committee since relocating to Tauranga in March 2013. As a key service provider to the export sector, and to the wider business community, I trust that our representation on the committee brings added diversity and a balancing perspective.
Greg Jarvis - Bluelab Corporation
Bluelab Corporation Ltd designs, manufactures and markets a range of metering and control equipment for measuring and controlling parameters such as pH, conductivity and temperature. The products are sold mainly through global distribution partners, although a small percentage of product is sold directly to customers via our buy on line website.
The company exports its product range to USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.
Greg has been the CEO and major shareholder in Bluelab (and its predecessors) since 2000, in which time he has developed significant experience in all aspects of international business development. Recent activities include the formation of the Bluelab USA office based in California to enable a stronger in-market presence for the company in North America.
Ian Macrae - Page & Macrae Engineering
Ian Macrae is the Managing Director of Page Macrae Engineering, an engineering company that was co-founded by his father in 1955. The company currently employs a team of over 150 staff and exports to many countries including Canada, USA, Australia and the Pacific islands with the main line of products exported being material handling equipment.
Ian has a NZ Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and has travelled and worked overseas extensively. Ian has many other interests including investments in Titanox Development Ltd, which has a hi-tech method of producing hard but lightweight titanium alloys and is the Director of TiDA facilities located at the Polytechnic.
Kylie van Heerden - Sharp Tudhope Lawyers
Sharp Tudhope has a long history of supporting BOP exporters, both as a sponsor of the "Exporter of the Year" award and through the various legal services provided to Exporters. They are a full service legal firm who has been around for more than 115 years providing commercial, property, employment and litigation solutions for exporters.
Export specific services include advising on funding arrangements; drafting Terms of Trade, Distribution Agreements, Licence Agreements and general supply chain contracts.
Kylie has been advising exporters for the past 10 years and has been involved in the establishment of distribution arrangements in a number of jurisdictions, most commonly Australia, UK and USA. Kylie also put in place multiple licence agreements, supply chain contacts and general terms of trade to suit the scale and needs of the relevant export business.
Kylie has a genuine interest in the development and growth of BOP exporters. She offers a different perspective to the challenges that face exporters and the potential solutions to those challenges. Kylie also has a strong background in matters of governance.
Mark Whitworth - Port of Tauranga

With an extensive background in Exporting and Logistics, Marks role as Customer and Cargo Services sees him interacting with exporters on a daily basis. Mark enjoys the challenge of finding solutions to exporter's problems that enhance the logistics supply chain, minimise cost and maximise efficiency and service.
Michael Sievwright - Trimax Mowing Systems
Trimax Mowing Systems is an exporter of tractor mounted mowing equipment for commercial mowing. Core competencies are innovation, manufacturing process development and in market sales and support. Trimax has established export markets in the UK, USA, Australia and the European Union. In 2014 they established a manufacturing facility in the UK to support their European growth. Trimax have their own distribution, sales and service staff in each of their markets supporting a sales network.
Michael has a background in procurement, where he spent his earlier career, prior to transitioning into market management. He held various export market management roles prior to becoming the General Manager of Trimax in 2012. Michael has on the ground experience in international markets, is motivated to have an impact of the wider export community, support to mentor new exporters on growing their export business and has insight into exporting high value product.
Nick Kirton - Zespri
External Relations Manager
With sales revenues of $1.9 billion in 2015/16, Zespri is one of the world's most successful horticulture marketing companies and the Zespri brand is recognised as the world leader in premium quality kiwifruit. Based in Mount Maunganui, they are 100 percent owned by current or past kiwifruit growers, and employ approximately 350 people in New Zealand, Asia, Europe and the Americas. On behalf of their 2,500 growers in New Zealand and 1,200 growers based elsewhere, Zespri manages kiwifruit innovation and supply management, distribution management and marketing of Zespri Green, Zespri SunGold, Zespri Organic, Zespri Gold and Zespri Sweet Green Kiwifruit.
Zespri exports to over 53 countries around the world. China is set to be Zespri's number one market by volume this year, with Japan number two.
Nick joined Zespri in 2014 and holds the position of External Relations Manager. In this role Nick is responsible for building Zespri's relationships with key stakeholders including the New Zealand Government. Nick is also responsible for Zespri's corporate social responsibility programme, ensuring Zespri delivers on its commitment to build a strong and healthy community; foster a skilled and innovative industry; and contribute towards a sustainable environment.
Prior to working for Zespri he worked in a variety of roles in the public sector, focusing on international trade agreements, economic development, and the primary sector. His most recent role was as the Ministerial Adviser to successive Primary Industries Ministers – Hon David Carter and Hon Nathan Guy.
Nick is a member of the National Export NZ Advisory Board and has strong networks within government and can be a strong advocate for Bay of Plenty exporters. He also has strong knowledge of the exporting landscape and can utilise the skills and expertise within Zespri for the benefit of the committee and organisation.
Robin Piggott - Dominion Salt
Export Sales Manager
Dominion Salt is a world leading manufacturer and supplier of salt products, including pharmaceutical, food, agricultural and industrial grade salt. The company exports to a worldwide market including Australia, South East and North Asia, South America and Africa. Dominion Salt has two plant locations, a refinery and Head Office at Mount Maunganui and a saltfield and refinery at Lake Grassmere in the Marlborough region. Dominion Salt operates a state of art Pure Dried Vacuum evaporator plant at Mount Maunganui, which supplies major local and multinational companies with high purity salt for export food manufacturing. In addition, Dominion Salt is the only manufacturer of pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride in the Southern Hemisphere. This product is sold mainly in South East and North Asia and is a growing market in South America. The company is now the dominant supplier into this market and now supplies sodium chloride for manufacture into injection, irrigation and dialysis solutions to a large range of customers including most of the major multinational pharmaceutical companies.
Robin has a background in manufacturing and has considerable sales experience both local and export. Robin has spent the last 25 years travelling to, and developing export markets, in the Pacific Islands, Asia and more recently South America. He has a wide knowledge of markets in a large number of countries and strategies for entering new markets. Robin is an active member of the New Zealand Shippers Council and is passionate about improving infrastructure, logistics and shipping efficiencies in order for New Zealand to remain competitive on the international market.
Steve Desmond - GreenMount Foods Ltd
GreenMount Foods manufactures and exports value added food products from two manufacturing sites; Mount Maunganui and Hastings. They export to Australia, Singapore, UAE, China, Japan and Taiwan. They sell frozen meals in Australia and Japan and in all the other markets sell culinary stocks and glaces for chefs.
Steve brings 25 years experience in export business development and sales into food service, mostly in Asia but also the Middle East and USA. Both multinational and SME experience, including starting exports from a non exporting company. He has wide knowledge of export markets, operational, technical and market development and knowledge of complex food products.
Steve spend between 2 -3 months a year in the markets that sell to, mostly in Asia but increasingly the USA.
Todd Murdoch - Puma Dart Product
Katikati based Puma darts are the global leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of dart sporting products. They export to over 70 counties and were recently appointed official maker for the World No.1, Michael Van Gerwen. Their key markets are Australia, Asia, North America and Western Europe.
Todd has proven strategic marketing expertise with 14 years' experience in a corporate brand marketing environment in the Bay region.
Todd is keen to network and share information with other smaller exporters in order to increase the regions collective capabilities. He is proud to call the Mount his 'local' where he can raise his family and share his passion for surfing.
